CALYPSO: A WORLD MUSIC

photoPhotograph: Pearl Primus.

Trinidadian Pearl Primus's dancing was one of the highlights of Caribbean Carnival. In this photograph, she appears in "African Ceremonial," a piece that she choreographed in 1943. Primus was one of the most accomplished presenters and teachers of African Diaspora dance in the U.S. during the 1940s and 1950s.
