Calypso in the Movies

Calypso was introduced to Hollywood by Trinidadian Lancelot Pinard, better known as Sir Lancelot. Given his upper middle-class background, Lancelot would not have performed calypso in Trinidad. After migrating to New York in 1939, however, he began singing the music for American audiences. A tour of the West Coast with Lionel Belasco's band led to a small role in the movie Two Yanks in Trinidad (1942). Lancelot went on to appear in many other films, often singing calypsos. Among his best-known movies were Happy Go Lucky (1943), I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and The Buccaneer (1958). Lancelot's light-hearted style and clear enunciation made his calypso performances very appealing to American audiences.
