House of Flowers

In 1954 the Caribbean was again represented on Broadway—this time in House of Flowers, written by Truman Capote and Harold Arlen. This musical was set in rival bordellos on a fictional Caribbean island. One of the dancers in the production was Trinidadian Geoffrey Holder, who arranged for a small steelband to perform in the show.

Caribbean Calypso Festival

In spring 1957, during the calypso craze, Geoffrey Holder presented a revue, Caribbean Calypso Festival, at Loew's Metropolitan Theatre in Brooklyn. In addition to his own choreography and dancing, the show featured dancing by his brother Boscoe Holder and calypsos by Lord Kitchener, both of whom were based in England at the time. Among the other stars were singers Lord Flea and Maya Angelou and Latin percussionist/bandleader Tito Puente.
