such as "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," "Matilda" and
"Marianne." Also featured were popular Caribbean songs like
"Yellow Bird," "Jamaica Farewell" and "The Banana
Boat Song." This variety of songs comprised the standard repertoire
of calypso records, nightclub acts and tourist hotels of the period.
The covers of calypso music publications typically featured photographs
of popular American singers or stereotyped images of Caribbean scenes.
Though calypso originated in the urban milieu of Port of Spain, Trinidad,
Americans imagined calypso in a tranquil rural Caribbean. In addition,
Americans generally perceived calypsos as anonymous folksongs, rather
than the compositions of identifiable artists.
