The Calypso Tradition

Since the early twentieth century, calypso artists in Trinidad have perpetuated a song form that offers incisive and witty commentary on local and world affairs. While they have maintained the basic characteristics of calypso, they have also introduced many lyrical and musical innovations, often influenced by the music of other countries. The soca of the past few decades continues this process of change. Calypsonians see themselves as part of an evolving tradition and often pay tribute to past artists. As both social critics and festive celebrants, they remain central to the cultural life of Trinidad.

Calypso in Trinidad is deeply rooted in Carnival and continues to comment on the uniqueness of Trinidadian life. At the same time, calypsonians are decidedly cosmopolitan in their outlook. Along with a strong interest in events and musical styles in other countries, many have traveled abroad during their careers and have sought international distribution of their records. Today, soca artists shape their music to appeal to foreign audiences, much like Lion, Invader and Sir Lancelot did during the mid-twentieth century. The idea of calypso as world music remains alive, both for artists seeking recognition and for audiences seeking new musical experiences.
