    The Calypso Tradition

Calypso traditions continue to thrive in other English-speaking Eastern Caribbean countries, such as Grenada, Barbados, St. Vincent and Antigua. Each of these countries holds a Carnival at a specific time of the year, so as not to compete with each other or the pre-Lenten Carnival in Trinidad. Many calypsonians and musical ensembles travel to perform at this array of Carnivals. Calypso also continues to influence the music of Caribbean countries where French, Spanish or Dutch is spoken.

Calypso in Miami

At present, hundreds of thousands of Trinidadians and other people from the English-speaking Caribbean live in cities in North American and Britain, such as New York, Miami, Toronto and London. Each of these cities holds a Carnival during the warmer months of the year. Calypsonians and other musicians from the Caribbean travel north to perform in this annual circuit of Carnivals. Carnivals and calypso are major vehicles through which people in the Caribbean and its Diaspora maintain connections with one another and express a sense of a shared experience.
