The Rise of SocaPart 1 | Part 2

|
Since the 1980s, soca has helped calypsonians to reenter the world music scene. They have discovered that they can reach international audiences more effectively through party songs, which have fewer specific references to Trinidadian society. Soca recordings are distributed throughout the Caribbean and in Caribbean communities in North America and Europe. Some recordings also reach non-Caribbean audiences. |

Musical experimentation in Trinidad from the 1980s to present has resulted
in several new forms of calypso/soca, such rapso, which emphasizes chanted
speech; ragga soca, which draws on Jamaican dancehall music; and soca
parang, which combines soca and Trinidadian Christmas music. A particularly
popular new form of calypso is chutney soca, which draws on East Indian
musical and verbal traditions. Approximately 40 per cent of Trinidad's
population traces its ancestry to India. |
