Calypso swept across the Virgin Islands' tourist industry in the post-World
War II era. The islands' best-known calypso band was the McCleverty Brothers,
who organized in St. Thomas in 1953. The group's lead vocalist, Carl McCleverty,
considered himself a "calypso entertainer," rather than a calypsonian.
In addition to singing, he performed dramatic dance routines, while wearing
a hat topped with fruit and plants. Along with performances in hotels
and clubs in the Virgin Islands, the band toured the Caribbean, the United
States, Canada and England.
